Description
This 30 minute eLearning module will provide participants with the underpinning knowledge they require to administer emergency medication for the treatment of seizures in the community.
Participants must complete one of the following pre-requisite courses prior to commencing this training:
An introduction to understanding and managing epilepsy OR
Understanding and managing epilepsy for Disability Support Workers
The Administration of Emergency Medication Program:
This is a two part course, persons wishing to administer emergency medication must complete both parts of this course:
- Epilepsy: Administration of Emergency Medication (Part 1)
The first part of this course is an eLearning module which covers the theoretical knowledge required to support a person living with epilepsy who has been prescribed emergency medication.
- Epilepsy: Administration of Emergency Medication (Part 2)
The second part of this course is conducted face to face (using technology). Participants will:
- go through the individual persons epilepsy plans and learn about the person’s specific emergency medication needs.
- be guided through the stepped process for administration of the prescribed emergency medication.
- practice the skills and be assessed on their ability to read the individual’s plans and administer the emergency medication according to the plans.
Please note this course is person specific and the participant may need to be completed more than once if supporting more than one person living with epilepsy.
This training is valid for 2 years unless there is a change to the individual’s treatment plan.
Topics Covered:
This is person specific training that:
- will provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to administer emergency medication for the control of seizures in the individual
- only applies to the individual for whom the training is being provided and should not be relied on to administer Emergency Medication for any other person
In Part 1 participants will learn how to:
- Understand the prescribed emergency medications, their side effects and potential impact on the individual
- Read and understand an Epilepsy Management Plan (EMP) and an Emergency Medication Management Plan (EMMP)
In Part 2 participants will learn how to:
- Read and understand the individual’s epilepsy plans
- Understand the individuals seizure and post-seizure activity in accordance with the individual’s EMP
- Confidently manage the administration of emergency medication in accordance with the individual’s EMMP
Who should do this course?
Anyone with a duty of care responsibility for a person living with epilepsy that has been prescribed emergency medication for the control of seizures.
Time and Assessment:
Part 1 of the course, will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes 14 questions to check understanding as the participant progresses through the course.
Part 2 of the course will take one hour to complete using ZOOM online technology followed by an online Practical Assessment.
Participants will be asked to complete a pre-course self- assessment of their understanding of epilepsy and a post course evaluation and self-assessment for each part of the course.
A Certificate of Completion can be generated on completion of all tasks.
